Soft washing an asphalt shingle roof, with clean brown shingles beside an untreated area covered in black algae streaks and moss

Low-pressure soft wash roof cleaning

Roof Washing and Black Streak Removal

Those black streaks running down your shingles are a living organism: Gloeocapsa magma, a hardy algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Left alone it spreads, holds moisture against the roof, and shortens shingle life. We soft wash roofs at low pressure to kill the growth without disturbing granules, which is the only method roofing manufacturers actually endorse.

Why it matters

What you get with our roof washing

Manufacturer-approved method

Soft washing is the cleaning method asphalt shingle manufacturers endorse. High-pressure washing strips protective granules and can void a roof warranty.

Extends shingle life

Algae and moss trap moisture against the roof deck. Removing them slows deterioration and helps you get the full service life out of the roof.

Safety assessed first

We evaluate every roof individually. Where a roof is safe to walk we work from the surface. Where it is not, we work from a ladder or the ground. We never take a shortcut on this.

Results you see from the curb

Black streaks are one of the most visible signs of an aging home. Removing them takes years off the look of the property.

How it works

Our process, step by step

  1. Roof assessment

We check pitch, shingle condition, and access to decide the safest approach before anything is quoted.

  2. Protect below

Landscaping, driveways, and walkways around the perimeter are pre-wet and shielded from runoff.

  3. Apply and dwell

A low-pressure soft wash solution is applied evenly and given time to break down algae and moss.

  4. Rinse and clear

Gentle rinse, debris cleared from gutters and grounds, and a final walkthrough with you.

Your questions answered

Roof Washing questions

Will roof washing damage my shingles?

Not the way we do it. We use low-pressure soft washing, which is the method asphalt shingle manufacturers recommend. Damage comes from high-pressure washing, which strips the protective granules off shingles. We never do that on a roof.

What are the black streaks on my roof?

They are an algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and spreads across the roof over time, usually worst on the north-facing slope where it stays shaded and damp.

How long do the results last?

A properly soft-washed roof typically stays clean for two to four years in the Atlanta climate, depending on shade and tree cover. Heavily shaded roofs regrow faster than roofs in full sun.

Do you clean every type of roof?

We take roofs case by case. Pitch, height, and condition all factor into whether a roof can be cleaned safely and how we approach it. If a roof is not safe to service we will tell you honestly rather than take the risk.
